The night before our last trip to Kauai I cleaned out the fridge and cupboards of any foods that I thought might go bad while we were away. Nobody wants to come home to a stinky surprise :) As I was cleaning I noticed one of my yams was beginning to root. The following morning, before our flight I quickly planted the yam under a inch or so of soil in a large pot. When we returned 10 days later I was delighted to see a tiny sprout! Over the next 4 months the yam grew into a big beautiful vine with lots of green leaves. We even enjoyed some of the leaves cooked, they taste similar to spinach. Recently we've had a few frosts here in San Diego, the vine wasn't looking it's best, so 2 weeks ago I decided it was time to harvest. Harvesting yams is easy when you plant them in a pot...just tip it over. I scooped the soil back into the pot and added some compost. I then replanted a healthy looking slip that had quite a few leaves along with a couple of smaller yams. I'd seen yams grown from slips before and wanted to give it a try. This is how my little yam plant looked for a week or so until...somebody ate it! This plant was right underneath my clothes line...believe me when I say I see it every day :) I'm kinda irritated about this... ![]() somebody ate my plant. Hopefully it'll make it but, it looks a little sad now. I cooked up some delicious roasted yams with my harvest. I'm going to plant more again soon. They grow into a beautiful vine that's great to eat...both the leaves and "roots". Happy Gardening All! Aloha :)

I was so excited to see the Fed Ex van today! I got new sneakers! I LOVE them. They make me smile :)They're classic slip-on Van's with an aloha print! What more could a Hawaii lover want? Well, except for a vacation maybe. But, check out how cute these shoes are... When it's too cold for slippahs these babies will keep my toes warm and my aloha spirit up. If you'd like a pair for yourself just go to the Van's website...$55 with free shipping.
Have a great day everybody! I got happy feet! Aloha! It's been very rainy and chilly in San Diego! It's hard to complain about the weather here...so I won't :) But, geez we got a ton of rain this week! We're trying to start this new year out right, so when the sun peaked out this weekend...we headed to the beach! At 64F we didn't frolic in the waves, though we saw a few brave keiki splashing about. And plenty of surfers in full suits. ![]() We had lunch at our favorite pizza joint, Filippi's Pizza Grotto in Imperial Beach. Imperial Beach is about as south as it gets in California. It's a little beach town south of San Diego, Just a couple miles down the road from Coronado. After a delicious meal we decided to take a walk down the pier. It felt so nice to feel the ocean breeze and see the sun glistening on the Pacific! It was almost warm :) Best wishes to you for a "warm" day no mater where you are! Aloha! Best wishes to you all for an awesome 2016! I got this calendar as a souvenir on our visit to Kauai in September. Can't beat .99 cents! And, they're a happy reminder of all the fun we had on Kauai. You can pick up these calendars at Longs. There's a store just down the street from our condo. ![]() Every month has a beautiful photo. Including my favorite February! My hubby and I had the best Honeymoon on Kauai last year in our little condo. I hope that your calendar this year is filled with good times... we have much to look forward to in 2016!
